Rich snippet
Enhanced search results displaying additional information beyond the standard title and description—star ratings, prices, availability, FAQ accordions, or event details.
What rich snippets provide
Rich snippets make search listings stand out with visual enhancements: gold stars for ratings, pricing information, availability status, FAQ accordions that expand in search results, recipe cooking times, event dates—information that helps searchers decide which result to click.
These enhanced displays increase click-through rates significantly. A listing showing "4.8★ stars (127 reviews)" attracts more clicks than plain text. Event snippets showing dates and locations provide immediate relevance signals.
Common rich snippet types
Review snippets: Star ratings and review counts beneath listings. Powerful social proof that increases trust and clicks. Requires aggregate rating structured data.
FAQ snippets: Questions that expand to show answers directly in search results. Occupies significant space, pushing competitors down. Requires FAQ JSON-LD markup.
Product snippets: Price, availability, and ratings for e-commerce products. Critical for product pages competing in commercial searches.
Event snippets: Dates, times, locations for events. Often appears in dedicated event carousels above organic results.
Implementing structured data
Rich snippets require structured data markup using Schema.org vocabulary. JSON-LD format is cleanest—separate script blocks that don't interfere with HTML.
Not every page with structured data gets rich snippets. Google chooses when to display enhancements based on query relevance, data quality, and page authority. But without structured data, rich snippets are impossible.
Testing and validation
Google's Rich Results Test validates your structured data and shows which rich results your page qualifies for. Test during development to catch errors before launch.
Search Console reports rich result status and errors across your site. Monitor this regularly—invalid markup prevents enhancements from appearing.
Rich snippets in every build
We implement appropriate structured data on every Fernside site: organisation details, breadcrumbs, and page-specific schemas. This maximises opportunities for rich snippet display, improving visibility and click-through rates.
