SERP
Search Engine Results Page—the page displayed after entering a search query.
Modern SERP features
SERPs have evolved far beyond "10 blue links". Today's results include organic listings, paid ads, featured snippets, knowledge panels, local packs, image carousels, video results, shopping ads, and People Also Ask boxes. This complexity creates opportunities and challenges.
Featured snippets occupy position zero above #1 organic results. Local packs show map-based results for location queries. Knowledge panels display entity information extracted from multiple sources. Each feature changes how visitors interact with search.
SERP analysis for keyword targeting
Before targeting a keyword, analyse its SERP. What features appear? If video results dominate, written content won't rank well—create video. If featured snippets appear, structure content to answer questions concisely.
Local pack presence indicates location intent. Shopping results suggest commercial queries. Image carousels favour visual content. Match your content format to what Google already shows for that query.
Organic vs paid results
Paid ads appear above organic listings, sometimes occupying the entire first screen on mobile. High commercial intent keywords may show 3-4 ads before any organic results. This makes organic positions less valuable for ad-heavy queries.
Informational queries typically show few or no ads, making organic positions more prominent. Consider SERP layout when prioritising keyword targets.
Zero-click searches
Many searches now end without clicks—featured snippets, knowledge panels, and direct answers satisfy queries without visitors leaving Google. This reduces click-through rates but increases visibility and brand awareness.
Target these features strategically. While zero-click results mean fewer site visits, they establish authority and capture attention before competitors. Balance featured snippet optimization with content that encourages clicks.
Monitoring SERP changes
SERPs evolve constantly. Track rankings and SERP features for target keywords. New featured snippets, local pack appearances, or image carousel additions create opportunities to increase visibility beyond traditional rankings.
Search Console shows impressions and positions, but doesn't reveal all SERP features. Use rank tracking tools to monitor complete SERP layouts over time.
